I used to primarily shoot B&W, minimalistic, long-exposure water/landscapes, completely devoid of people (or life really), much in lieu of Michael Kenna. I was really drawn to simple geometry and the smooth transition of values between white and… off-white.
While I’ve mostly moved away from that I think the same principles still apply to what I’m doing now. People have begun to make their way into my work images while my personal images still abstains from them, but i think my underlying eye for shapes and negative space is still ever-present.
Whether personal, commercial, digital, or medium format I think what it comes down to is what I leave out of the frame rather than what I choose to include.
